Week Beginning 8/09/16

What a collection of performing super stars we have in Year 3! Thank-you to all who came to our class assembly this week. The children were clearly very excited and proud to present their learning to the school and those at home. A fantastic performance by all, well done!

Maths
In maths this week, we added a Chinese twist to our current unit on shape by tackling Tangram puzzles in celebration of Chinese new year on Monday. It took lots of perseverance but we decided it was very rewarding when we finally achieved success!

We have also been busy describing and classifying 3D shapes by their proprieties and we even had a go at making some 2D shapes using peg boards, and making 3D shape using; straws and pipe cleaners, clix and polydrhon.

History
In history, we have been learning about the clothes of ancient Greece and making some ancient Greek style jewelry. We also had a tasting session, trying some of the foods that would have been available at the time of the accent Greek rule. Such as: figs, feta cheese, honey cakes and olives. Our favourites were the honey cakes and cheese but only a few of us liked the olives!

Well done to Necton Primary quiz team for coming second in the cluster quiz event. Finally, thank-you to FOSA for arranging the valentines disco. We all had a fantastic time!

Enjoy the break and we look forward to seeing everybody again on the 22nd of February.

Week beginning 1/02/16

What an exciting week!

Monday started with another team challenge in the form of a general knowledge quiz. Well done to all the children who were brave enough to sit in front of the school and have their knowledge put to the test. An extra special well done to Barnardo for coming first!

The Year 3/4 golf team were out on Tuesday competing against other local schools, finishing an impressive 3rd in their competition. Well done team Necton!

Much fun was had by all as we enjoyed a visit from the travelling theatre group Artefacts, performing their production 'Dig it'. Some of Year 3 were even chosen to help act on stage. It was also an honour to be part of the national Sign2Sing day on Friday; raising money for charity by singing and signing.

Literacy

This week we have been learning how to start sentences using adverbs, adverbial phrases and fronted adverbials. We have been applying our new skills as we wrote the introduction and build up to our very own versions of The Odyssey by Homer.

Maths

Maths has been all about shape this week. We have focused on 2D shapes, extending our knowledge of different quadrilaterals and describing shapes by their properties. We have even had a go at drawing them, making shape logic puzzles and 'what am I games'. We have also been identifying angles that are smaller or larger than a right angle.

History/Art

We are really enjoying our topic on ancient Greece, as we continued this week by looking at the artistic city state of Athens. We created mosaics, frescoes and jewelry that depict symbols that were important to the ancient Greeks.

Also, we are having a fantastic response to the Greek homework challenge. Here are just a few of the creative examples that have arrived so far.

In other news, it was lovely see so many parents and carers at the parents evening last Wednesday. I really enjoy the opportunity to share the progression and achievements of this fantastic class and look forward to seeing more of you next Thursday. Also on Thursday, is our class assembly. Come and see what we have been up to this half term as we celebrate our learning with drama and song! Finally, don't forget the valentines disco on Friday 12th Of February, tickets are still available at break times.

Week Beginning 25.01.16

Science was excellent this week as we enjoyed lots of different experiments when we investigated reflecting light. We found out why certain surfaces reflect light better than others and used torches and laser pens to discover how reflected light behaves. We even practiced our mirror writing skills!

Literacy
We have been using our imaginations a lot this week in literacy this week, whilst designing quest maps for our heroes and gruesome mythical beasts in preparation for writing our very own myths and legends. Of course we had to do lots of research first and enjoyed playing Greek mythical beasts top trumps!

Maths
Maths has also been very practical this week as we have been learning about units of measure by reading scales, solving problems and estimating capacity and mass.

Finally, thank-you to all who have booked in appointments for parents evening and I look forward to seeing you all next Wednesday.

Week Beginning 19.01.16

In music this week, we have been putting our rhythmic, timing and note knowledge to to the test and plucking along to songs such as 'Skip to my Lou'. We have also been playing lots of games with our bows to strengthen our upper arm muscles.

Mrs Bull brought in lots of unusual religious objects and artifacts this week. We had fun guessing what they might be used for in our R.E lesson.

Maths this week brought a lot of laughs as we started our new unit on shape, space and measure. We started looking for symmetry in shapes and objects. We looked at pictures of ourselves and what we would look like if our faces were completely symmetrical!

Art was challenging this week, when we attempted to paint a mini fresco in response to ancient Greek artwork. We pasted a board with plaster and painted into it using powdered paint. Its was really tricky working with the watery materials but we think we have produced some fantastic tributes to the ancient Greek Gods.

In Literacy, we have been continuing to look at a variety of Greek myths; such as Theseus and the Minotaur and Persephone and Hades. We discussed the characteristics and attributes of the ancient Greek heroes and Gods. We reflected on our own lives and thought about times that we needed to be courageous and who we got encouragement from.

Finally, congratulations to Isaac this week who achieved his red Merit badge after a lot of hard work! Well done!

Week Beginning 11/01/16

Its been a very creative week this week in Year 3.

Art

This week we finished off our Icarus pictures. We were experimenting with tint, shade and tone. We were challenged to change white through to yellow, then red and finally to black by gradually adding one colour at a time. We then made a tiny Icarus, using feathers and dowel, to complete the piece. We hope you will agree that the finished result is extremely eye catching.

History/Art

In history, we were pretending that we were curators at a museum, and had to piece together fragments of ancient Greek pottery. When we had successfully completed the task, we discussed what we could learn about ancient Greece from  the different shaped pots and pictures upon them.

We didn't stop there though! We did some further research on the i Pads about the uses of the various shaped pots and we even had a go at making some miniature Greek style pottery ourselves.

Literacy

We have been continuing with our unit on play scripts. This week we learnt how to layout the opening scenes of a play script. We had a go at writing our very own play scripts; some of us attempting the Greek creation story Pandora's box.

Numeracy

In numeracy, we have been applying our place value skills, doing activities, games and investigations around multiplying numbers by 10 and 100. We have also started learning new methods for written addition: the column method.

Again more fantastic news that even more of Year 3 have gained their certificates for the Read to Succeed scheme. Well done!

Week Beginning 4/01/16

Happy New Year! In year 3 we have had a very busy start to the new year!

Literacy

In Literacy, we have started our new topic all about play scripts. We had fun acting out some plays and trying our hardest to follow the stage directions. We are getting very good at identifying the key feature of a play script and even had a go at using the correct layout while writing alternative endings to a play.

Maths

This week in Maths we have been using Cuisenaire  sets to help us solve different problems. We have been working together to work systematically and discussing how we would know when we have found all the possibilities to a problem.

We have also been doing loads of counting and ordering of tenths, with fractions and even decimals.

 P.E

In P.E this week, we were very excited to use the large equipment. We practised mounting and dismounting safely, hanging with all of our body weight below us and thought about how we could transfer gymnastic routines to various equipment.

Also, we have started our new topic 'Ancient Times'. We have started looking at ancient Greece. This week we were time detectives, and discussed what we could find out about ancient Greece by looking at different artefacts such as; pots, coins and paintings. We have also enjoyed reading and listening to a few myths and legends. Ask us all about Icarus and Daedalus and The Gorgons!

Finally, a massive well done to Charlie, Samuel and Abria fro receiving their Read to Succeed certificates. 120 reading entries in their Home-School Diaries. What an achievement! I am also pleased to report that many children also received their t-shirts this week too. Keep up the hard work!
