Well, what an exciting week! I hope everyone has managed to stay safe and warm and you are all making the most of the snow. First, a few updates. Unfortunately, both World Book Day and the Seahorse reading café had to be postponed this week. New dates will be set for both and sent out as soon as possible.
Also, The Seahorse class Egyptian trip to Norwich castle is planned for this Monday 5th March. As it stands, this is still scheduled to go ahead, as hopefully the road conditions will vastly improve over the weekend. Please ensure you arrive at school promptly for the normal school opening times with suitable clothing for the weather (all activities are inside) and a packed lunch. We will of course update you as soon as possible if we hear differently from the coach company.
In the meantime, why not take a break from the snow and catch up on some of the highlights in Seahorse class so far this term...
Humanities
We are really enjoying travelling back in time to learn all about ancient history this term. We have been using atlases to locate Greece and Egypt, learning all about hemispheres and longitude and latitude. We have been putting our maths skills to the test, as we have learnt all about timelines and chronological order.
Delving deeper into the ancient civilisations, we have been looking at various artefacts to determine how life may have been different in the past.
We have been mixing the old with new, as we learn how to use word-processing packages such as Word and PowerPoint to create information slides about the ancient gods.
Science
This spring term we have been looking at rocks and soils. Looking at the different properties and uses of different rocks and why we have so many different sorts.
To find this out we looked at the different ways rocks are formed (igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic) discovering the processes by making chocolate rocks.
Ask us how fossils are formed because we know all about this now! We even created presentations about some of the famous fossil hunters like Mary Annings.
Moving onto soils, we have been getting up close and personal with the soil around school making close observations to determine its composition.
Literacy
We have leant lots of new skills and are becoming much more confident with our year 3 objectives. Please come in to the class and read some of our amazing myths we have written. We have read Homer's Odyssey and written our own alternative chapters incorporating the writing skills we have been learning this term. Come in and can you spot in our work: speech marks, conjunctions, time adverbs, fronted adverbials, onomatopoeias, similes and most importantly our creative ideas and descriptions of mythical creatures and exotic islands. Phew! We have also been learning different creation storys from ancient history.
Maths
Maths is getting exciting as we are now starting to apply our calculation skills to 2 and 3 digit numbers. We have been using new written methods such as the column method for addition and subtraction and the grid method for multiplications. Keep practising those times tables, as many children have already achieved their year 3 target of knowing the rapid recall of the 10, 2, 5, 3, 4 and 8 times tables. Very impressive. Recently we have been doing a lot of work on measures such as money, time and length. We are now moving onto mass/weight.
In other news, we have a fantastic hour with a Karate expert from a local karate school showing us holds, moves and even some throws.
