Week beginning 1.05.17

Literacy

This week started off by revisiting different types of sentences, but this time our focus was on how we can use conjunctions to make our sentences more interesting. We started by joining two simple sentences together to make a compound sentence using the FANBOYS conjunctions. Ask us what this stands for, can we remember them all? We made our own paper fans to help us remember them.

We then moved on to subordinating sentences: adding extra details to a simple sentence using conjunctions such as because, although, until, so that  and even though. This is all in preparation for our new literacy unit: Information texts. We looked at non-fiction texts and the pages within and identified the key features and their purpose. We all chose a rain forest animal that we would like to learn more about and started researching all about them, whilst learning how to take notes and lots of new scientific vocabulary.

Maths

As we near the end of our unit on measures and money, we have been combining lots of different methods and skills, as we calculated the cost of shopping lists and worked out the correct change. We have also had a big focus on the 4 times table and our number bonds to 100.

Topic

Things got hot and humid during our topic lessons this week when we learnt all about the climate in rain forest regions. We worked as part of a team, when we researched the climate for different rain forests around the world and then presented our weather forecasts to the class.

PSHE

In PSHE this week we learnt about the PANTS rule. We talked about us all having our own personal space and discussed all the people we could trust and talk to if anything is worrying us or feeling making us feel uncomfortable. If you would like to learn more about the PANTS rule visit the NSPCC website at https://www.nspcc.org.uk.

Art

During our art sessions this week, we looked at the diversity of insects found in tropical climates. We discussed why insects come in so many different colours and made origami butterflies and beetles. We used our watercolor skills to paint them using the patterns of real life insects as inspiration.
